The Oregon Department of Corrections has an exciting opportunity for an Activities Coordinator at the Santiam Correction Institution (SCI) in Salem, Oregon. This position is 4 day/10hr shift work week. Hours can be somewhat flexible. Candidates will be required to work some evenings and weekends for special events. About The Job – Your Role

Provide oversight, coordination, development, expansion, and maintenance of adult in custody activities at Santiam Correctional Institution. These activities range from enhanced visits and large events, scheduled tournaments, and competitions, to classes or small group learning events and individual skill building sessions. Serves as the facility's representative and liaison for adult in custody activities clubs and special interest groups. Ensures safe conditions for leisure and recreational activities through education, hazard mitigation, and development of activity parameters. Coordinates with Central Trust and SCI management team to ensure expenditures and costing for events or requested club purchases meet all relevant DOC criteria. This position organizes and carries out their duties and assignments daily with limited supervision.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Three (3) years of experience assessing, developing, coordinating, and implementing recreational programs and leisure time activities; OR
  • A bachelor's degree in Recreational Management, Physical Education or a related field.

Working Conditions

These positions work inside an adult correctional facility and may encounter angry, hostile or abusive Adult in Custody (AIC), which could result in personal injury, death or becoming a hostage. You are responsible for handling AIC incidents in the immediate work area as well as preventing escapes by proper control of keys, tools, equipment, and other potential contraband. You are required to report and document unusual incidents.

This position may require extensive standing and/or walking, both indoors and outdoors, possibly during inclement weather and may require some travel by motor vehicle for coordination with community volunteers and collection of donations. You must be able to lift or push a cart with a load in it. You must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record or an acceptable alternate means of transportation. You are subjected to be called back in the event of an emergency and may be re-assigned to any position as needed.

The salary range listed above is for non-PERS qualifying applicants. PERS qualifying applicants may be eligible for an adjusted range to reflect an additional 6.95%.

About The Process – What To Expect

Requirements For Employment

The successful candidate for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, there may be some felony convictions that could disqualify you for this position. However, having a felony record does not exclusively restrict you from being considered as an applicant. CJIS clearance is done at the conditional job offer.
